Manifest Destiny
Many Americans felt Texas was so valuable because most of the region was well suited for growing cotton nwhich was the South's most valuable cash crop. In 1821, Spanish officials granted Moses Austin a huge tact of land but he died soon after so his son, Stephen Austin, took over the land. Meaxico had just declared ot indepence from Spain and agreed to let Austin to start a colony only if his settleres were moral, hardworking, and promised to become Mexican citizens and join the Catholic Church. By 1830 there was about 25,000 Americans in Texas compared to the 4,000 Tejanos. the Mexican government responded by closing Texas to further American immigration. Stephen Austin and many other texans didn't like this so in 1835, they rose to revolt aginst the Mexican government. In late Feburary 1836, a large part(6,000) of Sant Anna's army reached San Antonio , Texas. There, about 180 Texans( who were under the command of James Bowie and William Travis) had taken over the Alamo and stoog their ground there. among those Texans was Davvy Crockett, a famous frontiersman. santa anna raised a black flag that meant " no mercy" but the Texans didn't give up minus one man. The Texans were outnumbereed by 10 to 1 but they perservered until every last one of them was dead. Sam Houston, the commander of the Texas Revolutionary army, staged a surprise attack on Santa Ana's army. The troops fought fiercly and yelled " Remeber the Alamo!". The Texans overran the Mexican army and Texan won its Indepencence. Texas became the Lone Star Republic but many Americans wanted to annex it to the United States. James K. Polk became president in 1844 and a year late congress voted to annex Texas. Texas was admitted as the 28th state.
Texas was important to Manifest Destiny because when people settled in Texas and won it's Indepence, it could then be added to the United States.
